Using random sampling (7th grade math)

In the first example, we look at 3 samples of words from an algebra book. Each sample is 20 words. We can see that the samples vary, and that the mean (of word length) from each sample is different. The point is to show how sampling works - in reality, if you're studying word lengths in a particular book, you would want to take larger samples.

In the 2nd example, we study height of bean plants, and we have two samples to look at. Again, the samples vary - their means and medians are considerably different and also the different measures of variability differ. It definitely looks like that the plants from sample 1 did better.
