How to teach long division step-by-step

A guide to teachers on how to teach long division step-by-step, for 4th grade math. We start out by having an even division in every place (such as 906 ÷ 3). This is just to help students to learn the notation (the long division corner).

Then we advance to having a remainder in the ONES place only, so that students can learn the "multiply & subtract" rule for finding the remainder, and can easily correlate that to what they already know about remainders.

Only after that do we get to the general case, where there may be a remainder in the tens or other places.

This step-by-step approach will enable students not be "bogged down" or overwhelmed by the entire algorithm right from the very start.
