Whenever a word problem asks, "How many more", we can write a missing-number addition for it, OR a subtraction. I remind the children about fact families, because they show us clearly how addition and subtraction are connected.
We solve several "how many more" types of addition problems, either by drawing more or thinking of subtraction. For example, to solve 1 + ____ = 10, you can draw, or you can think of the subtraction 10 − 1.
Then we solve two word problems also. Mathy has been eating lots of bowls of soup!
