Beginner lesson: writing expressions from words

I work through several examples where we write mathematical expressions from words (phrases). The examples are:

  • the sum of 4x, 5, and 7x
  • the quotient of 5x and 6
  • the difference of 6b and 8 multiplied by 2
  • the quantity 2a squared.

This lesson is meant for 6th grade and for pre-algebra. The first part of this lesson deals with the concept of an expression and evaluating expressions.
