We start out with a chart that shows the units of length in the customary system and the conversion factors between them (inch, foot, yard, mile), AND the corresponding units of area, plus acres in another chart. We compare the two and learn how an acre is defined.
Then I'll show you how to derive the conversion factor between square feet and square yards, and between square inches and square feet.
We also solve some word problems that involve conversions between units of area. I show you how to use the conversion factors from the chart, and also how to use ratios to do the conversions. The latter method is really neat because it allows us to know which exact units are involved, and by seeing some of the units cancel out, we will be able to know for sure that we're doing the conversion correctly.
